Points, levels, and badging in Google Maps

Levels are determined by the number of points you've earned. Receive 1 point for every place you review, photograph, add, edit, or provide additional information for on Google Maps. Earn up to 5 points per place. Unlock benefits along the way.

• Level 1 = 0-4 points
• Level 2 = 5-49 points
• Level 3 = 50-199 points
• Level 4 = 200-499 points
• Level 5 = 500+ points

Please note your points and level can take up to 24 hours to update in the Google Maps for mobile app. Points do not expire, though they may decrease if a review is removed for violating their policies. 

Contribute to Google Maps on a consistent basis to earn the most Local Guides benefits.

* Earn points by contributing to Google Maps

Each type of contribution is worth 1 point, with a maximum of 5 points per place. For example:

• Upload 1 or more photos to the same place = 1 point
• Upload 2 photos + 1 review to the same place = 2 points
• Write 5 reviews of 5 different places = 5 points
• Answer 1 or more local questions about the same place = 1 point
• Make 1 or more edits to the same place = 1 point
• Add a new place = 1 point

* Find your Local Guides level

1. Open the Google Maps app  
2. Touch the menu 
3. Touch "Your contributions"
4. Your level and total points count will be displayed

* Earn the Local Guides badge

Local Guides Level 3 and above receive the badge in the Google Maps app as a benefit.

* Private reviews, edits, or photos

Reviews, edits, or photos marked private by Google are in violation of their policies and are visible only to you. Private reviews, edits, or photos do not count toward your Local Guides level.

* My points went down. What happened?

Points may be deducted if your contribution is determined to be in violation of their content policy. Contributions that violate their policies do not count toward your Local Guides level.

* Do my points expire?

Contributions made to points of interest or businesses that are on Google Maps do not expire. Contributions made to businesses that have permanently closed and have been removed from Google Maps will not count toward your Local Guides level.

* Program requirements

Keep contributing to receive all program benefits. For some benefits, they give priority to Local Guides who are consistently contributing each month.
